South Africa is filled with top panoramic scenery and rich cultures and what better way to experience it on a camping and backpacker tour route which includes Johannesburg (City of Gold), Greater Kruger Park, St Lucia, Durban, Chinsta, Addo Elephant National Park, Tsitsikamma National Park, Oudtshoorn and Cape Town and to make it a bit more interesting by include a country such as Swaziland after Kruger and before St Lucia. Below is just an overview of what to expect at each city during a trip.
Day 1: Start of a tour in Johannesburg and would highly recommend arriving a day earlier to explore a Soweto Tour or the Apartheid Museum.
Johannesburg is also known as the City of Gold “Egoli” dating back to the 1886 Witswaterand Gold Rush which transformed quickly from a settlement into today’s modern hub of e-commerce and filled with diverse cultures it’s a city filled with history you would want to explore.
Days 2-3: Enjoy a scenic drive from Johannesburg and arrive at your accommodations followed by a cultural evening of dance & traditional dinner with the local community.
Hazyview is a lush green sub-tropical farming town in the Mpumalanga industry which is well known for its large banana and Macadamia nuts industry. A convenient town to stay if you wish to visit Kruger for the day since it’s a stone throw away from the Kruger National Park and this you will experience as you make your way to Kruger the following day to sight your very first of the big 5.
Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary – Swaziland
Days 4-5: Crossing the border from Kruger into Swaziland (please ensure you have sorted all visas for the relevant entries)
Whilst in Swaziland, explore the vast and wonderful Mlilwane Sanctuary, with its diverse habitat which supports an extensive species list and plenty of adventure with guided or self-guided exploring options on a 4560 hectares of land. The Southern Plains stretch towards the Nyonyane Mountain (Execution Rock).
Explore a hiking trail or mountain bike and enjoy all this Sanctuary had to offer from its large bird life and other animals, including warthogs, crocodiles, hippos, and more!

Day 6-7: Bid farewell to the Zululand, make your way back into South Africa and into the diverse lush St Lucia where you will be able to spend the night on the coast. If there is time then you may be able to do an activity and hop onto the St Lucia Wetlands Nature and Birding Boat Cruise and lookout for hippos, crocodiles and bird life.
Go explore Hluhluwe – iMfolozi Park proclaimed as the oldest Nature Reserve in Africa and home to the white and black rhino as well as lions, Buffalo, leopards, and elephant.

- Cape Vidal Excursion – This excursion introduces you to the beauty of this area in multiple ways during your choice of a half or full-day tour. Take a wilderness safari drive through UNESCO site Simangaliso Wetland Park, swim or snorkel in the waters of the Indian Ocean, walk along the shores of Cape Vidal.

Saint Lucia to Durban
Day 8: depart St Lucia and spend most of your day traveling to the warm shores of Durban just a stone throw away from your accommodation, enjoy the Indian Ocean with a refreshing swim.
Experience the” Bunny Chow” a traditional style food of Durban.
Day 9-10: Depart Durban and spend most of your day traveling to Chintsa and into the heartland of the Xhosa people in Eastern Cape. When you hit Chinsta it will feel like a piece of paradise with a long 15km stretch of beach. Settle in and rest well for a full day of exploring to follow.

Day 11: Say your good-bye to Chintsa and cross many unique valley’s and make your way to Addo Elephant National Park, which is now the third largest National Park in South Africa. Embark on a wildlife safari drive in search of resident elephants, rhinos, lions, buffalo, and even leopards. Mostly known for its elephants sighting all the other game is a fantastic experience.
Tsitsikamma National Park
Day 12 -13: Spend 2 nights camping in Tsitsikamma Area, here you are able to explore the National Park and its beautiful forests by hiking part of the famous Otto Trail along the coast or other optional activities such as snorkel, canoe, whale watch, or bungee jump.
Day 14: On-route to Knysna Opt to visit a cheetah sanctuary or a monkey park. Knysna is famous for the Knysna Lagoon and the “Heads” (sea cliffs)
Day 15: Before leaving Knysna be sure to opt in to visit the Knysna heads, a dramatic natural formation of two sea cliffs guarding the entrance way from the sea to a lagoon.
From Knysna, take a scenic drive to travel over the Outeniqua Mountains into the area known as Klein Karoo (“Little Karoo”), and make the quiet town of Oudtshoorn where you will overnight.
Opt to explore the Cango caves or visit an ostrich farm.
Day 16: Enjoy a scenic drive to Cape Town and explore the cosmopolitan city by night.
